LOVE LOVE
Michael Bastian Fall 2012 Menswear.

Thanks Laura

The Professional

When I like something in terms of fashion or appearance, I tend to stick to it obsessively for a time. I’ve never really had fashion idols but I do get inspired by movies, people, art, and life in general.

In 2008, when Styloholic made a apiece about me, I was obsessed with my riding boots and my riding pants. I remembered the shop girl asked how long I’ve been riding. “Well, I don’t. I just love the clothes”, I answered. I asked her what she thought of my look and her answer was ” Well, it looks like you’re going riding.”  oh, ok. Thanks.
I walked all over New York with my equestrian knee-high boots ( which were horrible to break in because they were made for riding support and not strolling  on cobble stones..). Nowadays, everyone and their grandmother has a pair of riding-inspired  rain boots, but it still love my pleaded riding pants.

So maybe I should get to my current, and somewhat un-orthodox, inspiration du jour: A 12-yeard old fictional  kick-ass girl named Mathilda. Yes, Nathalie Portman’s character from Leon. Luc Besson is my all-time favorite Director ( ALL TIME), I love Jean Reno, and Nathalie Portman used to be amazing.

So, I bought my bomber jacket at Uncle Sam’s on 8th street, I’m saving out my hair to cut it like hers, and I got my Dr. Martens. OK so maybe they’re a little to flower me happy, but hey.

Magali Guidasci was the costume designer. I looked her up and she’s done a bunch of movies, but nothing as good, in my opinion, as Leon.

I can’t get over how much I love what she did with Nathalie’s , and Jean’s, clothes for this film.

Polka Dots. A print generally considered feminine and prepubescent but is in fact a classical men’s wear print, especially in neck wear. Designers has started picking up the dots for bottoms, shirts, and outerwear.

1. In almost every picture of portrait of Winston Churchill he is wearing a polka dot bow tie.

2. Designer Mark Mc Nairy New Amsterdam puts polka dots on a chamber coat for spring 2012.

3. Colt Maldonado by Alex Alvarez collection introduces modern prints on classically tailored menswear. photo credits

4. Dr Martens 8 eye boot for men with pol a dot print.

6. Polka Dot Man was introduced as a super villain to the Batman comics in 1962

FJAERILEN - VINTAGE CLASSICS

I was walking down my street the other day and found a lovely store; Fjaerilen vintage classics.

It’s the most amazing vintage shop specializing in men’s wear. Good men’s wear. Classic tailoring and good quality.  They offer vintage and new productions and have an onsite tailor for custom-made alterations. The interior is lovely. Old wooden floors, vintage torso dress forms, and turn of the century props.

SYDNEY PRINTS

A few weeks ago I had a dream that I was applying for a job in Sydney. The application had to be written in letters made out of shoes. I was twisting and turning pumps, brogues, loafers, and Mary Janes and finally had a good letter.

I woke up satisfied with myself and ready to move to Sydney.

Since then I have been more and more interested in the Australian fashion scene, Since I am a a sucker for good graphic tees I fell in love with a Sydney based artist collective called Das Monk.  They make amazing graphic tees for men. I usually buy men’s since women’s graphic tees usually are too cutsie for my taste.

I love that Das Monk is made up from a vary of different designers. I especially love that each product comes with a small bio of its creator.

One of my favorite members is Arian Behzadi, a Neurobiology student and print designer. His print “BOY” is absolutely lovely.

favorite designers

1. Dries Van Noten -  My all-time favorite for both men and women’s wear.

2. Turkish designer Umit Benan. I’ve really liked his collections since 2010. Really liked

3. Alexander Wang -  so predictable. I’m a Wang girl.

4. Acne -  I like the Scandinavian approach to clean designs.

And then I have some favorites that come and go but it takes too long to list.

When it comes to consistency, I have my standards. I am about to rip out my hair. No matter how much I format the images, Tumblr seems to not want them to be the same size. So please bare with me as I had to resource to the photo upload instead of text.

This inspiration is the American West ca 1920-1930. I am a fan of old western movies and I recently came across the great images from Richard Avedon’s exhibition turned book “In the American West” from the 1980’s.

I simply love the rugged but well thought out look of a scruffy guy. Naturally distressed denim with somber colored shirts and a bandana as scarf. Ranger jackets in shades of beiges and browns along with a brown workers- or jodhpur boot.

As Creative Director for the RVTS Jeans campaign F2011 I used my old suspenders on both models.

OKE DOKE DR JONES HOLD ON TO YOUR POTATOES

I just found a place in Stockholm that specializes in vintage military clothing from Russia and Europe. I’m very excited to check it out tomorrow. In fact, I’m gonna skip lunch and go there instead.

Missing Luke. One of my best friends and talented men’s wear designer. We’ve had a lot of fun working in the apparel factory in New York’s garment district.

I credit my Dad for my interest in music. He tought me to love things that I don’t even really like. Like Frank Zappa.

My dad loves Frank Zappa and has since before I can even remember. Right now he has a Zappa song as his mobile ringtone. He loves it so much he usually let’s it play until the call is almost so he can listen as long as possible. This weekend my dad and I put new floors in my flat, listened to Zappa and Tom Wates, and ate Chinese food.
